B&R’s Old Fashioned Burgers, owned and
operated by Richard and Norma Hood, first opened it’s door on July 9,
1994. After years of laborious work in the manufacturing industry,
they decided that it was time to be the masters of their own
destinies. Inspired by other family members who had already ventured
into the food industry they soon followed suit. Also wanting to leave
a legacy to their two young sons, Bryan and Rashad, they took the
first initial of each child’s name and launched their new enterprise.
Since that time, they have become
a mainstay of the Hawthorne area. The restaurant offers a sumptuous
breakfast menu, mouth -watering burgers, home-style fries, tacos,
chicken dinners and fresh baked pies. The signature dish is their
Monster Royal Burger, which is a combination of two 8- ounce patties,
bacon or pastrami, an egg, chili and condiments. According to Chris
Cognac, a culinary detective who writes for the Daily Breeze Newspaper
and who specializes in reviewing “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants, “the
Royal Burger is all that and more…everyone I take there says it’s the
most amazing burger they have ever had.” The burger’s notoriety
resulted in the newspaper listing B&R’s as one of the Top Ten
restaurants in that area.
In the summer of 2004, customers
nominated the restaurant for a Hoodie Award in the Best Breakfast
category. At the time, the Steve Harvey Radio Show hosted the
awards. In August of 2006, B&R’s was featured on Alton Brown’s,
Feasting On Asphalt, culinary show that is part of the Food
Network.
In October of last year, the
proprietors hosted a Monster Royal Burger eat-off competition with
employees from the Unisys Corporation. The event was moderated by,
Gorilla Black, a local celebrity rapper who served as the hype man for
the competition.
Recently, the owners have branched
out into catering as well. Their most recent event was for actress,
Kellita Smith of the Bernie Mac Show.
Norma and Richard are pleased with
the success of their small establishment and have been equally blessed
to have their oldest son, Bryan join the ranks of their enterprising
team.
